Let your walls do the talking!

Wall treatments are key for adding layers of character and thoughtful details and when designing with wall treatments planning ahead is essential. Do you remember our beautiful linen wallpapered dresser that you fell in love with .... well we’re using wallpaper again and I have partnered with Eurowalls for our next big project. We’re so excited to share with you our family room update of the children’s old playroom. The boys never really used the room for playing so we redesigned it with the entire family in mind. We started this room by installing our board and batten treatment.

Here our our tips for installing board and batten.

Establish the height for your top rail, we set ours at 1850mm to the top edge. (our ceilings are 2550)
Screw timber for rail at your desired height where studs are located. Butt join at the corners of walls and where it meets architraves. We used Hume 66 x 11mm H3 Primed Finger Jointed Pine from Bunnings. Make sure to use a level or laser line level to help keep everything on level.
Cut vertical battens to sit between top of skirting and top rail. We had to cut the bottom of the battens at an angle to blend in with our skirting. Cut as many battens as you need to suit your wall spacings. We used approx. 500mm spacings between our battens for our walls and made sure that our front wall with our windows was symmetrical and worked our way around the room. My biggest hint is to mark all batten positions on the top rail and check that it looks right for the room before fixing anything.
Fix battens to wall using either plaster screws or skew nail, make sure to check for electrical wires before nailing and screwing. You can use glue as well if you are worried about boards coming away, however it will be permanent.
Caulk if needed using no more gaps.
Paint to finish.

Eurowalls has an amazing selection of wallpaper and for our room we choose AS CREATION Perfect Plains Wallpaper in the colour way blue, it is a textured wallpaper with a realistic linen detailing. I wanted a bold contrast to the Dulux White on White battens below it so this wallpaper was the perfect pick for our room. The wallpaper was a dream to work with but you will need wallpaper paste as this doesn't come pre pasted, don't let this deter you though using paste is as simple as rolling it on the walls.

Here are our general tips for wall papering. NB this paper is free match.

Measure in from the corner of a wall approximately 100mm less than the width of the paper and create a plumb line with a pencil and level or plumb bob. This will be used as your starting line to keep the wall paper vertical.
Pre cut sheets of paper approximately 100mm longer than the wall space height
Apply wall paper glue using a roller to the wall in an area that is approximately 2 roll widths. Use a paint brush to cut in areas with glue that the roller can't reach.
Apply the first sheet of paper and align to plumb line.
Screed paper to remove excess glue using a broad knife
Cut excess top and bottom using a straight edge and utility knife
Position next sheet to edge and screed air bubbles and excess glue using broad knife
Repeat process of applying glue and paper. Wall paper joins can be finished using a seam roller
Cut around window and door trims using straight edge and knife
Clean up excess glue using a damp cloth, make sure to wash out regularly
